This is book 3 of the Psi Corps Trilogy, and unlike books 1 and 2, it takes place after the timeline in Babylon 5. It looks inside the heart of the man who has become the bad guy we saw in Babylon 5, and causes us to hope for his redemption as he stumbles on in his life. It's a sad story and i wrestled with giving it 3 or 4 stars, and decided on 4 even though i didn't enjoy the story, not because of the writing, but because of being frustrated as we see Bester sinking into the hole his life has become. The trilogy is well worth your time, even with the inevitable conclusion. ( ) As I suspect would be true of most tie-ins, I could only ever recommend these books to those who were fans of the original TV show, Babylon 5. It was the show that created the fascinating and robust universe in which stories are set and peopled it with remarkable characters to tell an epic tale over five years. It was hurriedly told in four before a last minute and unlikely renewal gave the show a fifth season; something of an orphan telling an ongoing story never as beloved by fans as the initial tale. "The Fate of Bester" and the two books preceding it forming a trilogy whilch delves into the life of Alfred Bester, telepath, Psi Cop extrordinaire and all-round b'stard, is a little like that last season for me. Bester's motivations are explained but I find it difficult to empathise with his arrogance, his lack of remorse or humanity and, specifically, with his idea of what is justified in the name of self-defence - a question that is in the headlines today as Israel continues its actions in Gaza. This book was written 15 years ago but I couldn't help on finishing the book to find myself thinking not about Bester but about the current conflict in the Middle East and wish for something more substantial in exploring such themes. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
