A resource designed to help educators, trainers, workshop leaders, and anyone who assists groups to learn. Direct education is an approach developed to effectively teach adults in groups. Direct education cuts through the pretense and needless complications that can distance learners from the subject matter. This approach focuses on the encounter between teacher and group; it replaces scattered attention with gathered attention. It emphasizes critical issues related to diversity, authenticity, and emotions. Step by step this groundbreaking book describes how to design effective learning experiences and shows what it takes to facilitate them.

Innovative teachers look beyond current practice, examine what is and isn't working in the classroom, and then devise means by which students can develop deep learning of the subject at hand. Lakey's take on education is that adult learners learn better in groups than they do as individuals. He divides this book into 4 parts. The first part looks at the anatomy of a group - what is the role of the individual in a group experience? He suggests that because groups are mysterious, that a good group facilitator can use the mystery to influence group dynamics and learning. Part 2 of the book looks at diversity, difference and emotion as it influences groups. Even when groups appear homogenous, there are stark differences in each member of the group. How a group acknowledges difference and uses it for their gain can at least partially determine the success of the group. Part 3 looks at designing effective group experiences. Lakey suggests that logic - as a means of structuring only works when the learner "gets" the logic. He claims that rarely happens. Logic means that you start with definitions - lots of definitions - and when you've memorized enough of them, you can start to learn a little context. Instead, he recommends building on successive approximations (Homans, 1950) - experiences that allow the learner to learn some of a concept - without expecting they'll get it all on the first pass. With more experiences, the learner builds a more complete understanding of the subject matter. The final section gets to facilitation - the first word in the title. He walks the novice facilitator through the process from prepping for the very first encounter through the culminating transformational work. The book is an easy read - not filled with jargon, rather written more as a novel - telling the story of developing understanding through group work.
