Education is regarded as part of the essential fabric of democratic societies. Yet, despite some advances since Title IX, much still needs to happen to transform the structure of schools, as well as teacher education programs, to ensure the social and economic well-being of girls and women. The experiences of girls and young women, particularly those of color, remain underaddressed: peer and school culture often perpetuate gendered stereotypes, while gender continues to be underrepresentedin curricula and teacher education programs. This millennium volume--which combines the latest research and statistics, project overviews, strategies, and resources for curriculum transformation with personal narratives of educators and the work of girls and young women--creates a rich dialogue about the need keep gender on the chalkboard.
