Like any collection of witticisms, this book has strengths and weaknesses. It is pretty well guaranteed that any particular reader will find items in the collection that they feel don't belong there; they don't see the wit, or find it simply ordinary. Still, it was an enjoyable collection, and a quick read. Most of the quotes were familiar, but there were some I didn't recognize. It would have been a better book if it included an attribution of where Twain wrote, or said, it. ( ) This slim volume of Mark Twain quotes was published in 1961, judging by the date on the copyright page. (I bought it at a library sale.) Twain's reputation for wit is unquestionably well-deserved, and a lot of the quotes here are wonderfully funny, or biting, or insightful, or all of the above. I can't help thinking, though, that pulling all his best lines out of context probably doesn't really do the man or his writing a great service, and there are more than a few of them that I suspect would have worked better if encountered where he originally put them. The book also features some generic, cartoony illustrations, which don't really add very much. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
