This story takes a very interesting look at the developing feelings between a rich Lord (Gerard) and a poor servant's son (Mattie) over the years that they know each other. The relationship that builds is very tentative, because practically non-existent except for a few encounters over the years as they grow up. But the underlying longing from Gerard's point of view was palpable.

I enjoyed following his growing realization that he wanted more from Mattie, I felt for them both as they struggled with how to make things work. The ending gave me a lot of hope - mainly for a sequel. It would be great to see these two characters attempt to make a life for themselves in whatever slightly less restricted area than late 1800s England (my estimate) they end up in. ( )
