Though I don't know modern Greek, it seems to me that the translator brings new insights into Cavafy's work. I've read other translations and was pleased with these. There seems to be a trend in publishing now to omit the original work. That was the decision made in this book's design. From my perspective, it would have been both beautiful and helpful to have the Greek originals included. A few of Yeros' photographs are stunning and and invited me to think about the accompanying poem in a new way. Most, though, were simply beautiful photographs of beautiful men. No compalint about that, and it's well worth the few that opened my eyes to new appreciation of the poems. ( )
A few of Yeros’s pictures contain as much mystery and intimacy as Cavafy’s poems. And although Cavafy has a reputation for being difficult to translate, a few of his simplest poems reveal themselves as potent bundles of emotion. When these few gems end up sharing a spread (each spread in the book contains one poem and one photograph) the result is quite wonderful. Unfortunately, this rarely happens. Erelijsten
From renowned painter and photographer Dimitris Yeros comes a collection of photographs inspired by the classic poems of one of Greece's greatest writers: Constantine P. Cavafy. Yeros has produced nearly seventy photographic illustrations using a mixture of models and fellow members of the artistic community such as Gore Vidal, Clive Barker, and Jeff Koons as his subjects. These striking images bring out every nuance of Cavafy's writing--with romance, intrigue, humor, despair, and eroticism each playing a part. In addition to its visual richness, the book presents new English poetic translations of Cavafy by David Connolly (Eroticon, Journal of an Unseen April) which are faithful to the original Greek works while bringing them to life for a new group of readers. Stunning portraiture and erotic photography paired with new English translations of the poetry of C. P. Cavafy--called the greatest modern Mediterranean poet. Literary, artistic, celebrity and gay interest. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
