Terra nostra, la novela más ambiciosa y compleja de Carlos Fuentes -Premio Rómulo Gallegos 1977-, es sin duda uno de los títulos fundamentales de la narrativa hispánica contemporánea. Un lenguaje en constante ignición, crea, destruye y reinventa la maquinaria crítica de la fábula: desde el remoto silencio del mundo de los mitos cosmogónicos a la noche mohosa y chirriante de grilletes y gorgueras de la España de los Austrias. Terra nostra es un vasto viaje por el tiempo que se remonta a la España de los Reyes Católicos para desvelar el ejercicio del poder trasplantado a las colonias; el de Felipe II, el absolutismo español de los Austrias, el mecanismo y las estructuras verticales del poder en la América española, en definitiva. Y es, también, un texto que somete a crítica la noción misma de relato. En la historia de la novela representa un caso límite: epifanía y fundación. "Terra nostra es historia vista a través de los ojos de un novelista, con todos los recursos de la imaginación literaria a su disposición. (...) This massive meditation on the Conquest and its effect on imaginations, moralities and all related matters pertaining to worlds both New and Old hit me like a cinder block. I recall going to Day's Espresso at the time, such a locale offered magnificent lattes, they made me fat. I didn't care. I loved this book. There is a well of intertextuality within which is nerdy yet effective. ( )
