Robert Louis Stevenson, acclaimed master of adventure stories (Treasure Island, Kidnapped), also had a darker, more macabre side to his imagination. In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), the most famous of Stevenson's weird tales, a physician concocts a potion that collects all of his evil tendencies in a separate personality, one split off from his everyday, good self. But the loathsome Mr. Hyde resents being controlled by Dr. Jekyll, and strives to take command himself. Stevenson gave rein to this same horrortinged streak in many of his short stories. Characters confront sorcery ("The Isle of Voices"), demonic possession ("Thrawn Janet"), degeneration ("Olalla"), grave-robbing ("The Body-Snatcher"), and malignant spirits ("The Bottle Imp") in tales set variously in Hawaii, Scotland, Spain, and England. "Markheim," which owes much to Crime and Punishment, features murder as well as an appearance by the devil himself.
