Born in a small Sicilian village and orphaned at age nine, Modesta spends her childhood in a convent raised by nuns.Through sheer cunning, she manages to escape, and eventually becomes a princess nordie | Oct 14, 2023 | Goliarda Sapienza, infatti, ha scritto un romanzo popolare incentrato su tematiche femministe che, perlomeno in Italia e per quel che ho potuto constatare negli ultimi anni, di popolare non hanno niente, visto che sembrano sorprendentemente lontane dalla cultura di massa (penso a fiction italiane, programmi televisivi, letteratura d’evasione, e via dicendo). Sono rimasta molto colpita da questo aspetto: pensavo che avrei letto un romanzo mainstream e invece mi sono ritrovata tra le mani un libro che grondava melodramma e ha messo a dura prova la mia sospensione dell’incredulità in più punti. Tuttavia, per quanto questo possa essere stato fastidioso, non ho potuto fare a meno di apprezzare il lavoro di Sapienza, il suo essere riuscita a portare il femminismo in una storia popolare, accessibile e godibile per chiunque. È assai probabile che, se “trafficate” abitualmente con il femminismo, L’arte della gioia non vi riservi rivelazioni o vi scateni chissà quale riflessioni inedita: anzi, la filosofia della differenza che vi aleggia oggi ci sembra superata. Però non si può fare a meno di tifare per Modesta, anticonvenzionale fin dal nome con un deciso adieu al nomen omen. Sarebbe bello, per la popolarità e la diffusione che hanno ultimamente, se qualcuno facesse de L’arte della gioia una serie televisiva: è un testo che si presterebbe molto bene a questo tipo di trasposizione e così si riuscirebbe a farlo uscire dalla cerchia molto intellettuale alla quale mi sembra sia stato “condannato”. Spero solo che un’eventuale trasposizione non venga affidata a emittenti dagli eccessi di pudore facili (*cough* Rai *cough*): Modesta oggi sarebbe più scandalosa che mai e di certo non se ne starebbe tremebonda ad aspettare il discorso redentore di Don Matteo... Goliarda Sapienza's breathtaking masterpiece, considered too shocking for publication when it was written, is a fictionalized memoir, a book of romance and sexual adventure, a family saga, a coming-of-age novel and a hymn to being alive. Goliarda Sapienza's The Art of Joy was written over a nine year span, from 1967 to 1976. At the time of her death in 1996, Sapienza had published nothing in a decade, having been unable to find a publisher for what was to become her most celebrated work, due to its perceived immorality. One publisher's rejection letter exclaimed- 'It's a pile of iniquity.' The manuscript lay for decades in a chest finally being proclaimed a "forgotten masterpiece" when it was eventually published in 2005. This epic Sicilian novel, which begins in the year 1900 and follows its main character, Modesta, through nearly the entire span of the 20th century, is at once a coming-of-age novel, a tale of sexual adventure and discovery, a fictional autobiography, and a sketch of Italy's moral, political and social past. Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996) was born in Catania, Sicily in 1924, in an anarchist socialist family. At sixteen, she entered the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome and worked under the direction of Luchino Visconti, Alessandro Blasetti and Francesco Maselli. She is the author of several novels published during her lifetime- Lettera Aperta (1967), Il Filo Di Mezzogiorno (1969), Universit di Rebibbia (1983), Le Certezze Del Dubbio (1987). L'Arte Della Gioia is considered her masterpiece. Anne Milano Appel, Ph.D., a former library director and language teacher, has been translating professionally for nearly twenty years, and is a member of ALTA, ATA, NCTA and PEN. E' un romanzo di formazione, uno spaccato di vita ed anche un affresco storico e politico dell'Italia della prima metà del '900, ma soprattutto è la storia di Modesta. Modesta (nomen omen) che giganteggia sulle pagine e non lascia spazio per nient'altro: può essere assassina spietata e madre devota, amante spregiudicata e rispettabile capofamiglia, cinica ed idealista. Uno nessuno e centomila di Pirandelliana memoria quindi? No, solo una donna affamata di vita e di libertà.
E' un libro che inizia "col botto" e che per più di metà tiene desta la nostra attenzione con una girandola di incontri ed avvenimenti. Poi purtroppo dall'ascesa del fascismo in poi si fa più statico e politicizzato; troppo spesso la voce dell'autrice sembra parlare per bocca dei suoi personaggi ed i dialoghi assumono un tono didascalico e a volte quasi pedante, da comiizio elettorale.
L'impianto narrativo è classico nell'impostazione ma sperimentale nella forma, con continui cambi dalla prima alla terza persona e luoghi e tempi confusi e sfumati; personalmente non ho apprezzato perché rendono la scrittura poco fluida, ma capisco i motivi dietro queste scelte di stile.
In conclusione come valutare un romanzo così fuori dal comune? Prenderò a prestito una frase della postfazione e mi limiterò a dire che L'arte della gioia è qualcosa di più e anche di meno di un libro bello, è un libro memorabile. (
