I thought this book was a really, really fun read. I enjoyed almost every second of it. The only reason I took so long reading it was because I listened to the audiobook for 2/3 of the book. I think this book did a good job not going too goofy with the pop culture references while still making lots of fun pop culture references. On some places this book could be a little silly and in some places it seemed a little guy oriented but that didn't take away from the great messages and themes of the book to me.
I really liked all the characters (even if I wanted to scream at them because of their poor decision making sometimes). I thought the girls in this book were very well written there was a girl who was disguised as a boy for most of the book which I find is often a very overused, frustrating, annoying, and just a bad trope but in this book I thought that characters motivation made sense and it was actually kind of thought provoking
I thought the settings in this book were also interesting and the plot flowed very nicely. The ending actually had my heart racing because I was so nervous(I do usually react very strongly to stories). Overall I thought this book was fun and exciting and a great read. If anyone is considering reading this book I totally recommend that you do because it is a really great book especially for people who like nerdy and geeky pop culture and video games.

Edit April 2nd 2018: because the movie for this book is coming out shortly I have been think about this book a lot more and I will be decreasing my rating from 5 stars to 3 stars (really 2.5 stars) I have heard criticism of this book that has changed my opinion but more than that I have grown a lot in my reading and when I read this I wasn’t as critical when reviewing. I had a lot of fun reading this book and I do not hate it like some people do ( though I think those people have very very valid criticisms) but the more I thought about it the more I realized this book is just fun without really much of a message behind it at all. It attempts to make a point but it really only shows up at the end instead of growing throughout the book. Because this book really is just nostalgia porn I no longer think it deserves the five star rating I originally gave it. I would encourage people to read other reviews that dive into the controversies of this book because they do a much better job explaining it than I could. I had a lot of fun reading this book. That has not changed but I know longer consider books that a just fun and I don’t feel have a clear message ( on top of having controversy and parts I don’t agree with at all) to be five star worthy. Really 3.5 stars in my book (pun intended). A very good recommendation from my friend who lent me his kindle to read it, which meant I could never figure out a page number. I really liked the dystopian future vibe but I felt it was a bit ruined by the surfeit of '80s references. A friend pointed out its similarity to Daemon (another book I really liked). I'd be interested to read more of his work and I'm excited to see the movie! ( )

Ready Player One: Pop culture immersion therapy to solve all ailments
(review- November 30, 2016)

2011.. This book was published in 2011. What was I doing in 2011? I read Johnny Shaw's Dove Season (which was amazing.. GRRM released a book.. Some sexytime was had, as I had a kid in 2012, so that must have been good. I bet I ate food and went to work.. What is obvious is that I was out of the loop with geek culture and remained segmented to the side for the following five years.

Cue my friend V, dropping by my office and slopping Ready Player One down alongside a copy of Zombies vs Unicorns. She advises me that this tome of pop culture joy is a must read and that she never got around to Z vs U. At the time, I was heavily invested in the rabbit hole of American political news for a couple months solid and managed to put off reading this even longer.

My repeat delays would have disqualified me as a Gunter. Innovative Online Industries (IOI) would have the egg and the universe would not be right.

At this point there is not even much point in admitting I read it. A movie is in production (Spielberg) and a mass number of friends and acquaintances pestering me for my POV when reading was complete (insert mentions of their desire to reread).

Even inclusion of the cover image was feeling.... Redundant. So I show it side by side with a bookmark I made to keep my place as I read.

Nutshell perspective? This book was a-maz-ing. Read it.

Quick overview, very quick.

2044 is the year of the Rat according the Chinese zodiac. This is not relevant. What is important for this time frame would be the global energy shortage, the food vouchers, the rampant crime/housing crisis/unemployment.

What is important is the Oasis. Oasis is a virtual world, millions of worlds. People jacked in, living in virtual space, earning money, going to school.

The thing about the Oasis is that the reclusive creator has died and left it's vast architecture and billions as a prize. Hidden within the endless world of Oasis, a series of easter eggs have been stored. The first person to locate them will inherit it all. The news launches a new subculture of Egg Hunters (Gunters). Their bodies exist shit deep in reality, creating filth, aging, requiring sustenance. Their minds are free to wander whatever conceptual environment they want, provided they have the credits to transport their avatar there.

Protagonist Wade Watts is a teenager, raised with the Oasis, in the Oasis, in many aspects by Oasis. He was just average until the contest. After that his life had meaning, he became a Gunter, dedicating his life to the investigation of 1980's culture and scouring the Oasis for anything that will give him a leg up on the game. Toss in some murder, evil corporations, teen angst, a meter of references obscure enough to require google.

Let's drop another couple relevant pop culture calendar years into this post, just for fun.

As someone who has ZERO interest in video games, I did not anticipate how completely engrossed in this book I would become. I can't wait to see the movie. ( )

Like many people I thought this book would be hard to read because of the 80's references but it turned out to be a great way of knowing more about videogames, movies, music, and everything else our parents grew up surrounded by. The concept of this story is fenomenal and I love how Cline could mix futuristic and old time stuff to create an awesome story. Loved all the characters and how they develop throughout the book. I think this is a book that shows us that we should stop being around technology and start living more in the real world. I like to think that Wade pushed that Big Red Button, if you know what I mean. ;) ( )

Ready Player One borrows liberally from the same Joseph Campbell plot requirements as all the beloved franchises it references, but in such a loving, deferential way that it becomes endearing. There’s a high learning curve to all of the little details Wade throws out about the world, and for anyone who doesn’t understand or love the same sect of pop culture Halliday enjoyed, Ready Player One is a tough read. But for readers in line with Cline’s obsessions, this is a guaranteed pleasure.

The breadth and cleverness of Mr. Cline’s imagination gets this daydream pretty far. But there comes a point when it’s clear that Wade lacks at least one dimension, and that gaming has overwhelmed everything else about this book.

Like most gunters, I voted to reelect Cory Doctorow and Wil Wheaton (again). There were no term limits, and those two geezers had been doing a kick-ass job of protecting user rights for over a decade.
It was the dawn of a new era, one where most of the human race now spent all of their free time inside a videogame.

And now the conditions at any schools had gotten so terrible that every kid with half a brain was being encouraged to stay at home and attend school online.
The Great Recession was now entering its third decade, and unemployment was still at a record high. (2045)
