X is frustrated with his place near the end of the alphabet, and annoyed that practically no letters start with him. He starts criticizing a lot of rules of spelling and challenges other letters who must get bored being paired all the time. According to the Alphabet Constitution, "If the majority of letters are dissatisfied with the current order, a new alphabet may be created. Each letter would take a different place and play a different role in this new alphabet." They call for a vote, and X is all excited thinking about the possibilities. That night he dreams about what it would be like to serve the functions of some of the other letters. He realizes he likes things the way they are and casts the deciding vote to keep the current alphabet. ( )

X wants a new alphabet, he is tired of not playing what he thinks is a more important role. He suggests that they make a new alphabet! He goes home and dreams of what it would be like to be another letter and decides he wants to be himself. The other letters of the alphabet are relieved and react in their own unique ways. This book does a great job at incorporating different letters of the alphabets into the background illustrations. I think it could even make for an interesting searching activity for children reading the book. Genre - ABC Book.

X is tired with his lot in the alphabet, as he's always next to next to last, only xylophone and xray start with him, and he wants to reorganize the entire alphabet. But he sleeps on it the night before the vote is taken to reorganize the alphabet, and he understands his importance as an "x" that other letters don't have. Nice book for youngsters. ( )

The story of being dissatisfied with your role in life is one that is easy to relate to. Students might connect to this by expressing dissatisfaction with being the oldest child, middle child or baby of the family. The story's resolution presents the good message of realizing the dissatisfaction and hard work of others, and helps one come to terms with one's own role. My only concern with this book is that the jokes about English spelling might only appeal to students too old to want to read an alphabet book.

An interesting children's book. Alphabet books can be very deathly boring, but this one is both hilarious as well as a good teaching tool.

It's the story of X, who feels like in the Alphabet he's just not appreciated enough, and so he winds up calling for a vote on whether the alphabet should change its order.

The one thing I didn't love about the book was its art. My favorite children's books are those that have a little less child like art, but, still, despite the art I loved, loved, loved the story. ( )
