I thought the concept of the book brought together with a child's drawings was a great idea. I enjoyed the colorful and meaningful paintings. I found the poetry of the book too complicated for a child to understand without adult explanation; but this can be a good opportunity to explain charity with a child. Overall, I enjoy the book and look forward to sharing it with the children within my own family. ( )Deze bespreking was geschreven voorLibraryThing lid Weggevers. This is a children's book written and illustrated by a mother and daughter team. I thoroughly enjoyed the illustrations, which are paintings using mostly the primary colors of red, blue, and yellow. Hoadley presents a story too complex and too erudite for the audience of the book's illustrations. Hoadley tries to rhyme, but the words have no meaning for a child. I felt the theme was too vague. I love the fact that a mother and daughter wrote this, with the daughter doing all of the illustrations. I think this is a wonderful book and it will make a great addition to any permanent library. It's not every day that I am able to read about children who want to help others, and it is certainly a value that I wish to instill in my own children someday. The illustrations by little Kailee are absolutely adorable, and her sweet innocence reminds me that there is still some hope in the world. Both mother and daughter should be extremely proud!
The Thanksgiving Coat speaks to the values and beliefs that we should all develop and pass on to our children. But, Hoadley is very specific about how to sensitize our children to the issues of homelessness and hunger without scaring them.
'The Thanksgiving Coat' mysteriously appears on the doorknob of Sweet Zara who is going through a challenging patch in her life. Someone took the time to leave the Coat for her and every time she wears it, she feels the love and healing which radiates from simple love and kindness.Illustrated by 5-year old Kailee, "The Thanksgiving Coat" is an extension of a true story.Prior to volunteering at a local food bank, little Kailee and her mother went to the grocery store to choose their donation of the healthiest canned vegetables they could find. Kailee was moved to see families who would have neither food nor clothing if it weren't for the loving donations of complete strangers. She asked WHO would be receiving the vegetables she took the time to choose. Did they have children her age? Did they have toys? Did they sleep in a bed? Did they have coats in winter? Did they know that she chose the vegetables especially for them? Would it make them happy? From Kailee's questions, the idea for "The Thanksgiving Coat" was born. This book is being developed into a video short by Anthony LaMolinara (Oscar Winner for Spiderman 2) and is also becoming a Musical Theatre Production for release in 2012.
