( ) The saga of the Walking Dead and the survivors continues. Just when things seem to be settling down for Grimes and the others, Kirkman shows us that no one is safe. This volume includes the story arc of Woodbury and the Governor. For some readers, I do give warning there are some torture scenes (one of them definitely deserved retribution) that may shake the comfort level. Personally, the scenes worked for me (then again, I am used to reading some gruesome stuff overall). If nothing else, what this series shows is that people, when times get tough, often revert to their worst nature. This volume may not do much to reaffirm your faith in humanity. Having said that, there are also moments of redemption in the tale as well. And in the end, Kirkman is making a very compelling story that just keeps going on and on. You cannot help but wonder what is going to happen next or what other tragedy the survivors will face. I believe I have said before that I am not a huge fan of the zombie genre (at least not in the current manifestation where zombies are basically the next sparkly vampires), but this is a series that just pulls you in. I read this hardcover edition in a couple of hours or so. By the way, if you are a serious fan of this series, I think you will definitely want to collect these hardcovers. They are solid volumes, and you get some extras at the end. On a side note, I wonder how much of this the people making the television series will keep, adapt, or choose not to depict when the series returns for the second season. Should be interesting to watch. I don't know. This installment was grim. Perhaps excessively grim. Less on the zombie front than the human front. Again. I suppose it's believable that after living through such conditions, any human life other than your own would be disposable. It would be hard to stay sane otherwise. I know this series isn't going to turn a corner and be all roses and sunshine, but still, this chapter has be wondering if it isn't the time to get off. But I'll probably give it at least one more book. The story keeps getting more engaging, the characters continuing to develop nicely, and, finally, the author is getting more daring in the story arcs and letting the real freakshows begin. This is what I'd expected in this series; I'm glad I'm finally getting to see it, and I'm looking forward to future volumes! What can I say about this series that I haven't already said? It's fantastic! This third collection gets extra dark and violent as we encounter the governor for the first time. Let's just say they tamed down his character A LOT for the tv adaptation. Which is completely understandable... because the governor is completely batshit crazy! For fans of zombies, end of the world scenarios, graphic novels, and dark, violent storylines :) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
