It would be a good story for parents to read their children before bedtime. It gives children a make-believe explanation of the moon and the stars, and relates it back to falling asleep and dreaming good dreams. Since children ask “why?” constantly, they may relate to the baby polar bear’s curiosity about the moon. The dialogue between mother and child in this book may remind children of their own interactions with their parents. More technically, I like the fact that the book rhymes and is repetitive. For instance, after each explanation from his mother, the baby cub asks, “Mama, why?” The mother polar bear always responds in some sort of rhyme at one point saying, “So now, little one, let’s rest our heads, and dream moonbeams in a stardust bed.” I think that after reading this book multiple times at home, a child may be able to pick this book up and read it independently due to its repetitive and rhyming nature. The illustrations are timeless and drawn in very soothing colors, rather than overly bright colors. This also adds to the sense of a calm bedtime story. Overall, I believe that the big idea in this book is that children can sleep safely and soundly with their caregivers watching over them due to the way that it ends. When the mother polar bear has finished her explanation she tells the baby cub that she will dream of him the whole night through, and they fall asleep together. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
