A HE story of the war which was carried on between the United States and Mexico during the years 1846, 1847, and 1848 constitutes an interesting and' brilliant chapter in the history of the nation. The record of the campaigns of the little American army makes also a distinctive contribution to the history of war. Since this war was brought to a close, more than half a century has passed. Two generations have come and gone, and the scenes and events of these campaigns now belong to history or to tradition, While the art of war itself has been very materially modified. The deeds of brave men belong, however, to all genera tions and a record of heroism and of patriotism serves to maintain the noblest impulses of human nature. The narrative in question falls naturally into three divisions: first, an analysis of the causes of the war, second, an account of the conduct of the campaign, and third, the actual consequences of the war.
