The author spent two tours of duty in Iraq in the early to mid-2000’s. He came back suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), agoraphobia, as well as physical injuries. In this book, he tells his own story of how he found solace and companionship in a service dog named Tuesday. He relates how his disabilities impaired his life, the process he went through to acquire Tuesday, and how the dog improved his ability to cope. The author is outspoken in his criticism of the politics involved in the Iraq war and how they adversely impacted the soldiers in the field. I learned a great deal about the training of service dogs, what it was like on the front lines of the war in Iraq, and how it feels to live with PTSD. Although one of the main characters is a dog, this book is not for children due to the war-related violent content; however, the author has written two other books geared toward kids (Tuesday Takes Me There and Tuesday Tucks Me In). My only quibble with the book was a good amount of repetition. Overall, I found it a positive story about how animals can soothe emotional scars and improve the quality of life for people living with physical or psychological disabilities. Recommended to those interested in bonds between humans and animals, the psychological impact of war on veterans, and training of service dogs. ( ) If you love dogs, read this book. If you love our troops, read this book. If you want a real life story of an Army captain's two tours in Iraq and the resulting damage to his body and spirit, read this book. If you want to read about a warrior and a hero, read this book. If you want to see how a dog can change a life and make a broken man whole, read this book. This is a book with heart. A veteran who had been wounded and suffered from PTSD was given the wonderful opportunity of having a service dog. He and that beautiful golden retriever he named Tuesday became best friends. Having the dog gave this soldier the calm and purpose he needed, and together they helped raise awareness of PTSD. This is a sweet true story that might bring tears to the reader's eyes. Montalvan takes you into his world so that you begin to understand the sacrifices of our combat veterans and the struggle to adjust to life after deployment. The inspiring bond between this warrior and the dog who changed his life shows that sometimes hope comes in the form of a big golden dog. You cant help but find yourself cheering on Luis and Tuesday. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"Tuesday has a personality that shines. I am not kidding when I say it is common for people to pull out their cell phones and take pictures of and with him. Tuesday is that kind of dog. And then, in passing, they notice me, the big man with the tight haircut. There is nothing about me--even the straight, stiff way I carry myself--that signals disabled. Until people notice the cane in my left hand, that is, and the way I lean on it every few steps. Then they realize my stiff walk and straight posture aren't just pride, and that Tuesday isn't just an ordinary dog. He walks directly beside me, for instance, so that my right leg always bisects his body. He nuzzles me when my breathing changes, and he moves immediately between me and the object--a cat, an overeager child, a suspiciously closed door--any time I feel apprehensive. Because beautiful, happy-go-lucky, favorite-of-the-neighborhood Tuesday isn't my pet; he's my service dog." Captain Luis Montalvan returned home from his second tour of duty in Iraq, having survived stab wounds, a traumatic brain injury, and three broken vertebrae. But the pressures of civilian life and his injuries proved too much to bear. Physical disabilities, agoraphobia, and crippling PTSD drove him to the edge of suicide. That's when he met Tuesday - his best friend forever. Tuesday came with his own history of challenges: from the Puppies Behind Bars program, to a home for troubled boys, to the streets of Manhattan, Tuesday blessed many lives on his way to Luis. Until Tuesday unforgettably twines the story of man and dog"-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
