I enjoy tavern story collections - the individual stories can be humorous or thought provoking; and the setting and characters can be engaging. And this collection is manifestly a tribute to Arthur C Clarke's "Tales from the White Hart", one of the best of those collections. But this collection is definitely patchy. Most of the big name contributors didn't disappoint, but some of the other tales were just shaggy dog stories, and failed as stories and as humour. The worst story of all is the last in the book, and may be responsible for my bad mood. I would have written a more favourable review if I had skipped that story! I suppose I would probably buy a follow up collection, in the hope of a few more gems.
