This book is about his love of the Mets along with his personal campaign to be elected to the office of general manager. You don't have to be a Mets fan (or a baseball fan, for that matter) to enjoy this book -- Megdal's easy narrative style combinined with the highlights and history of the Mets make this a fun and interesting read. Written by a sportswriter who is also a big fan of the Team he covers... the Mets! Great insight from an expert of the game, Megdal knows his baseball! I'm afraid that's really all I can say about it, as I learned while reading it that I really don't know much about baseball. If you're really into baseball, or sports in general, then I suspect this is a great book for you. If, like me, you could watch a baseball game once in a while but aren't committed to a team, it might not hold your interest.Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. If you've ever felt that you could run your local team better than the numbskulls currently in control, this is the book for you. Megdal is more than knowledgeable about the Mets and baseball and provides illumination on all aspects of running a team. He is also flat-out funny. If the Mets won't have him, maybe my Rockies will. Howard Megdal has been lucky enough to live out every die hard sports fan's most narcotic of dreams, by finding the means to attain a living from one of the things that he is most passionate about in his life--The New York Mets.Megdal's story as a rabid baseball fan, which has allowed him to comment on both a Mets fan blog, Amazin' Avenue, and the 24-hr, TMZ-like hub of baseball's hot stove, MLBTradeRumors.com, was taken a giant step further in the process of writing this book. Megdal's Mets have a long, embattled history of residing among baseball's also-rans, which is illogical, since they have benefited from nearly all of the advantages of being located in baseball's largest market (even though they are the town's weak sister in comparison to the Yankees). At the time of the book's writing, the Mets were amid a tumultuous period where it had become clear that they were very likely to make changes at both manager and general manager, in hopes of resetting the organization's (then) recent failings. In lieu of these failings, Megdal's passion was melded with his faith in the passion of baseball fans and the efficacy of democracy. Megdal began a lighthearted, but no less serious, public campaign to replace former Mets GM Omar Minaya. As Megdal's campaign gains momentum and people begin to view his run with legitimacy, Megdal comes to the realization that even though he is a rabid, committed fan who would like nothing more than to see his beloved Mets return to success, there are more important aspects of his life that will always supersede (and encapsulate) his passionate fandom. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"In this fearless and half-crazy story, Howard Megdal decides that simply rooting isn't enough-it's time for fans to stand up and take charge. A lifelong and feverish New York Mets fan, he has been there through thick and (more often) thin. And yet, year in and year out, the Mets seem to find ways to disappoint him. The almost-victories, the mistakes, the lost years; it's all too heartbreaking. And so, mustering his energy, heart, and sportswriter's pedigree, Megdal decides to become the general manager of the Mets. It's not an elected office, but that doesn't mean you can't campaign for it.Part baseball history and part personal narrative, Taking the Field is at heart the story of a fan who decides to take control. Staging public rallies to gain support, and hustling for interviews and opportunities, Megdal rewrites the rules for being a fan: If you want a championship so badly, maybe it's time for more than praying at the television and buying merchandise. Maybe it's time for action. As he tells his personal story, Megdal intersperses the narrative with a history of rooting for his team: the Tom Seaver trade, the Doc Gooden saga, the highs and lows, the mistakes, and the moments that made it worth the pain. At the same time, he learns the lessons of this history, outlining for the public his campaign pillars: logic, transparency, and passion. With the unstinting passion of Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer, the humor and business smarts of Moneyball, and the elbow-grease appeal of Julie & Julia, Taking the Field is a love letter to baseball"--
