( ) I thoroughly enjoyed "Just a Gril" but this book isn't for everyone. The reader needs to be really interested in history as the book is full of dates and historical facts. On the eve of her coronation, young Elizabeth Tudor spends a sleepless night reflecting on the journey she took to get to the throne. Told in the first person, I like Elizabeth's voice. She is smart, ambitious and does not suffer fools lightly. She is critical of others but also hard on herself. At the same time she comes across as a lonely young woman, who has lost everyone she loves, struggling to stay alive amid palace intrigue and deception, and the reader can't help but sympathise with her. As a lover of history, I found this book a satisfying read. On the eve of her coronation, Queen Elizabeth I is looking back over her life so far: the execution of her mother, the succession of stepmothers, her relationship with her half brother and half sister and the way she has been in and out of favour with whoever has been in power. Although Elizabeth I lived an eventful life this book was less than gripping - perhaps because it was written as a reminiscence. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"I do not remember when I discovered how my mother died, it seems to be something I always knew, a horror I absorbed through my skin." Determined, passionate and headstrong, Elizabeth I shaped the destiny of a kingdom. Her mother; Anne Boleyn, was executed by her father Henry VIII. From that moment on, Elizabeth competed with her two half-siblings for love and for Britain's throne. In the gilded corridors of the royal palace, enemies she couldn't see's well as those bound to her by blood'lotted to destroy her. Using her courage to survive and her wits to confound those who despised her, this young woman became one of the greatest monarchs the world has ever seen. Even though she was just a girl, she had already lived a lifetime. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
