Two cats lie awake under the same bright moon, venturing out into the wider world at the same time. One is a city cat, and the other a country feline, but their mannerisms are the same. Both enjoy stretching, twitching their whiskers, and exploring. And both like chasing after mice. When a thunderstorm strikes, both hightail it for home, happy to get out of the rain...

There really isn't much to One Moon, Two Cats, which, truth be told, I sought out largely because of the beautiful cover, and because of my love of cats. It was a sweet little book, featuring some winsome felines on their nighttime adventures, but the real appeal lies in Yoko Tanaka's lovely illustrations, which were done in acrylic, and which were quite expressive. Recommend to young cat lovers who wonder what their feline companions get up to at night. ( )

I am a huge cat lover, so it is obvious why I chose this book to read. I especially liked the artwork, the cats' eyes were very expressive, almost human like. I feel this way when I look at my own cats sometimes, as if they are sitting there silently judging me. This would also be a good book for an early reader, as there are quite a few words in the book they could easily read long with.

One Moon, Two Cats by Laura Godwin is about two cats living very different lives but having similar adventures under the light of a full moon.

Thematically the book is akin to the Country Mouse, City Mouse parable. Here too there's a country cat and a city cat. But they don't meet and they don't comment on each other's lifestyle. Instead, the country and the city provide landscapes for their nocturnal explorations.

The one moon provides a point of similarity from which Godwin, paired with Yoko Tanaka's illustrations, begin to find other ways in which these two cats are similar.

The text has a nice, limited vocabulary, good for beginning readers. The eye catching, full page illustrations are good for group story time.

I like the text and the illustrations for the most part, but not cat's eyes. ( )
