The author provides brief histories and snapshots of Oxford throughout it's long history. The foundings of many of the colleges and halls are explained, and the graduates and fellows often list like a Who's Who of the UK. Breakthroughs and innovations are highlighted, as are troubled times and hardships, such as after the Civil War. Famous men and women, both of the colleges in particular and the nation as a whole are mentioned from the past several centuries. The growing pains and consolidations of the University are clearly shown. The physical alterations that have been made over the years are explained, as different architectural styles rose and fell from favour. Overall a great introduction to the city and University of Oxford. The added sections on museums and various walking tours would be a real aide to anyone planning a visit to Oxford.
