Main characters: The relationship between Craig and Jessie is the highlight of the book! Craig, Jessie, and Katy are mostly fleshed out and worth the investment. Other characters: The side characters are pretty shallow. The villain is a megalomaniac out to take over the world (yawn). All the characters from Craig’s past get killed off right away. There’s just nothing here to invest in, except for the ogre and his wife. World: Set in modern California and Detroit, most of the world is normal. There are vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and something Cornell calls imps, and though they aren’t your standard Halloween creatures, we never learn much about them. We don’t learn much about the blood magic the villain uses, either. I hope the rest of the series dives more deeply into describing the world. Story: The book starts off with two kick-ass chapters right out of an action movie! There was a neat twist to the story, and Cornell did some good foreshadowing of things to come. Overall: Probably won’t make my A-list of books from the first installment, but I’ll pick up the second book and see how it goes. If the world and the secondary characters get richer, I'll be a happy camper. Purchased. Review courtesy of onebooktwo.com | one book, two reviews. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

HTML: Craig Lockman... No one had called him that in fifteen years. Not since his days at the Agency. Not since he was trained to kill creatures that were supposed to exist only in nightmares. Yet the teenage girl on his doorstep not only knows his real name, she claims she's his daughter. Before Lockman can learn how the girl found him, he's attacked by a black-ops team of assassins. But these aren't ordinary killers—they're heavily armed vampires sent by his most hated enemy. Forced on the run, Lockman protects his daughter from an onslaught of horrors while searching for who betrayed him and why. The investigation leads him to Detroit, where he unwittingly sets a plan into motion that could trigger a paranormal apocalypse and cost him his soul. .Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

I might be a little off but this book reminded me of the movie The Professional except instead of an assassin you have an ex-supernatural enforcer- I think it was the way Lockman could put aside his feelings about a situation and do what must be done "for the greater good".
The ending (or should I say beginning?) was a nice twist I didn't see coming. ( )
