Good, but I have nothing to say. This is one of those books you read, enjoy, put down and never think of again. And by enjoy, I really enjoyed it--but it probably won't appear on my re-read list. ( )

Primo volume della serie spin-off di Night Huntress dedicata a Vlad. Direi che siamo subito partiti con fuoco e fiamme. Letteralmente.

Alzi la mano chi ha perso la testa per Vlad nelle sue apparizione nella serie di Cat e Bones. Ehi, ehi, non tutte insieme! Arrogante, letale e spaventoso, Vlad è sexy da morire, selvaggio e indomabile come il fuoco del quale è padrone e signore. Uno che non esita ad impalare i suoi servitori se non eseguono alla lettera i suoi ordini. Uno che è capace di qualunque cosa per difendere la sua gente.

Leila, invece, dopo il terribile incidente che le ha donato grandi poteri ad un altissimo prezzo, vive evitando quanto più possibile il contatto con chiunque. Difficile non comprenderla se rischi di fulminare con una scossa elettrica chi inavvertitamente sfiora la tua mano destra e puoi percepire tutti i peggiori peccati di ognuno con un tocco. Poteri straordinari che suscitano l'interesse di un vampiro determinato a distruggere il potente Vlad... uno che ha aspettato secoli per preparare la sua vendetta.

Le cose non vanno proprio come aveva inizialmente previsto il cattivo e Vlad e Leila si incontrano. E quale meraviglia scoprire che Vlad è del tutto immune alle sue scosse. Almeno non a quelle della mano...

La storia va avanti nel tentativo di scoprire chi è e dove si nasconde questo determinato nemico di Vlad. E l'attrazione tra l'oscuro vampiro e Leila cresce. Sì perché per la prima volta dopo l'incidente Leila può toccare qualcuno senza paura di fargli del male. E dal canto suo Vlad è tanto sicuro di sé da non dubitare per un istante che alla fine quella mortale sarà sua.

Sua, ma senza coinvolgimenti emotivi. Vlad lo mette subito in chiaro con la sua consueta, brutale sincerità. Ma non sembrerebbe proprio così... pare che Leila sia in grado di cambiare alcune delle sue abitudini più radicate... per esempio quella di lasciar andare senza punizioni una donna mooooolto arrabbiata che ha avuto l'ardire di schiaffeggiarlo.

Con tutto questo fuoco, le scene di passione sono decisamente ardenti... e direi che se la batte alla pari con Bones (che, ad un certo punto, compare con Cat... la sua avversione per Vlad è decisamente divertente). Abbiamo certamente a che fare con uno dei vampiri più sexy del genere Paranormal Romance.

I’m enjoying these little side trips in the Night Huntress world, and this first in the series following Vlad and Leila’s story was promising. I was bummed out that it ended with less resolution than I’d hoped—not quite a cliffhanger, but it introduced a new problem that will carry into the next book. I wouldn’t have minded if it had been third person narration switching back and forth from Vlad to Leila’s POVs, but maybe I’m just used to that structure from all the Regencies I read. I’m pretty sure that’s what Frost did with Charles and Denise’s book, and that’s still my favorite book in this world. I did like Leila’s voice, though, and I’ll for sure continue with these. Marty was a great side character, and I was glad her estranged family was brought into the story too. Leila’s power and her carny background are interesting, and the character is honest and brave without being a martyr. It’s fun to see Vlad as a love interest, but he’s so inscrutable I want to know what’s going on in his head! I loved that Bones showed up just long enough to cause mischief for Vlad before disappearing again. Looking forward to continuing the story! ( )

A pretty good start to this series. I had started reading the Night Huntress series years ago and only have bare recollection of what happened there and how Vlad was introduced. But I do remember some of Cat and Bones.

This series is about Vlad, the "real" Dracula. He meets Leila as she's poking through his mind trying to locate him for other vampires who are hunting him. He ends up taking her to protect her. And once they're together sparks begin to fly ... literally.

I like the relationship between them. I think they took each other by surprise, so it was cute to see them falling. The ending was abrupt, but I assume the story continues in the rest of the series. So I'll be interested to see how this ends up. ( )

First read in 2012, reread in 2020. Dropping from five to four stars upon reread - I still love it, but only my favorite books get five stars really, and while this is great, it’s not on my best-of shelf. I love Leila and her backstory and I ADORE the Night Huntress world. Nice dose of angst but not enough to land on that shelf. I love scarred heroines but it’s kinda incidental here - she’s widely considered a total babe. ( )
