Fiction. Short Stories. Thriller. HTML:

In this new short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child, available exclusively as an eBook, a young Jack Reacher knows how to finish a fight so it stays finished. He knows how to get the job done so it stays done. And, in one of his earliest challenges, he knows that his analytical brain is just as important as his impressive brawn.

Okinawa, 1974. Even at thirteen, Jack Reacher knows how to outwit and overpower anyone who stands in his way. And as the new kid in town, that's pretty much everyone. His family has come to the Pacific with his father, who's preparing for a top-secret Marine Corps operation. After receiving a rude welcome from the local military brats, Reacher and his older brother, Joe, intend to teach them a lesson they won't forget. But it's soon clear that there's more at stake than pride. When his family's future appears to come crumbling down, it's the youngest Reacher who rises to the occasion with all the decisive cunning and bravura that will one day be his deadly trademark.

Second Son also includes a thrilling excerpt from Lee Child's forthcoming novel, The Affair.

A short story about Jack Reacher as a boy. A quick read. Nothing wonderful. ( )

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. Why do authors feel compelled to write short story dreck, with nothing additive to their characters? Is it just to see if they can? This novella? goes back to when Jack Reacher was a 13-year old, and his father is moved to a new island posting by the Army. It is just silly that the MPs allow Jack to do their jobs, solving the "thefts" of a code book and school exam. ( )

Very short story, but quite interesting nonetheless. ( )

Set in Okinawa, Japan in 1974 this novella is the first book in the Jack Reacher series by chronology and in publishing order comes after Worth Dying For.

It's a light and short story giving some further background to Reacher himself, his childhood and the family dynamic. Within we see the characteristic investigative style of Reacher beginning to form, as well as his way with the ladies.

Overall, a good little background piece with a short yet interesting story arc. ( )

Not a review, just a tip: This short story is included in the unabridged recording of The Affair, read by Dick Hill.

On a hot August Thursday in 1974, an old man in Paris did something he had never done before: he woke up in the morning, but he didn't get out of bed.
