I do love this series, clearly by how many times I've read it however I will change my rating from 5 to 4 only for the simple fact that it really does have some editing issues and sometimes the main character can be way too naive and annoying but if you continue the series it does get better. (at least for me it did). This book just gives me the nostalgic vibes when I get in a reading slump or I can't decide what to read, this is always my go to book to get in that reading mood. It's fun and yes frustrating at times because as I stated above the main character can be so naive. It doesn't help that everyone around her doesn't really help because they continuously keep her in the dark. In Reckless Magic, we are introduced to Eden, a 16 year old girl that is starting another school after weird things happened at previous schools that she couldn't explain. We get to find out what those weird things are, on top of starting a new school and being told about her "specialness", Eden has to deal with Kiran Kendrick who can't seem to stay away from her and keeps getting her into trouble because she is being told to stay away from him (when will people learn this is the essence of forbidden fruit that teenagers can't stay away from each other). Then the one friend Eden makes is taken away and here begins the unraveling of her background and this story. I like the magic aspect and the teen drama isn't unbearable for my liking. Again this is was a fun read for me. I recommend if you like books like Twilight, Crave, or shows like Charmed, for me this gave me those same vibes. This gets my minimum 2 star review for being able to finish the book. There were however very, very serious problems with this book. 1. Basic copy-editing errors, mostly with homophones. I counted at least 4 instances where "you're" should have been "your," passed and past getting mixed up, etc. 2. Repetition. For example, the reason that the overall level of magic in the world is decreasing is explained in exactly the same way, multiple times, with no further elaboration. Another example: the principal brings the main character in the office at least twice to have the exact same conversation with her. 3. Poor plot development. There's no reason given for the secrecy that the main character is subjected to. This is difficult to do well, and it's a common literary trope because it allows us to learn along with the main character; but the author uses this device without ever attempting to explain it. There's also absolutely no development in the relationship between the main character and her main love interest whatsoever. She's just in love with him for no particular reason, just off the bat. Personally, this last factor is a big issue for me, because objectively speaking there's absolutely nothing to Kiran to recommend him. I just can't get into a book where I'm supposed to enjoy a romance with an empty-headed pretty face with no moral compass. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
