Ruthie Hammond had a dream. After high school she was moving to a big city...anywhere but Brewster. Surely God had a plan for her, and it wasn't in this small, nowhere town. Twenty years later she's back in Brewster working at a failing radio station with her boyfriend Jack. She's given up on God and if she wants to get out of town, she'll have to do it solo. But when her first love, Paul, moves back, Ruthie wonders if happiness really does lie beyond this podunk town. Again, I was impressed by this author. I initially thought I wouldn't like this book as much as the first one, After Anne, but wanted to read it prior to reading the third book in this series, Becoming Olivia (review forthcoming), and ended up liking it just as much!! I was suprised that a "christian" novel had characters cohabitating prior to marriage because that's typically not seen, but was glad because it really added to the reality of the book. The characters were very real, with realistic inner and outer struggles. Roxanne Henke has a gift for making you care about these people in Brewster and in the end you are rooting for them as if you are personal friends with them. I hope Roxanne continues to write books because I will continue to buy them! I highly recommend this author! ( )

Prologue

Ruthie

For Jack, it was always about the music. He'd walk around listening to his own drummer, drumming his way down the school hallways, thumping on desks with his fingertips, tapping his feet in a syncopated rhythm that even had the band teacher yelling, "Jack, stop it!" I didn't know him then, but I knew who he was. "Musicman." we called him. For Jack, it was always about the music.
    Not for me.
