In the chronicles of the American West, little attention has been given to the hardy men who measured and marked the land-the surveyor. W.D. Twichell one of Texas most noted early surveyors, arrived on the arid Texas plains in 1885. Frontier conditions still prevailed-stockmen quarreled over conflicting land claims, sometimes to the point of gunfire and some cowmen, in spite of a new state law, still enclosed other peoples land with their newfangled barbed wire. Twichell worked for an immigration company, for the greater XIT Ranch and other spreads, for railroads, for Amarillo and other cities, for the State of Texas and oil companies. He was in Beaumont when the giant Spindletop gusher roared skyward to change the nation's way of life. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
