If only I'd had this book or this information when I was a teenager. I was totally shocked. I had no idea that tobacco is just one of the many carcinogens in cigarettes, nor that the industry knew as early as the 1930s that smoking caused lung cancer. Amazing that the industry went to such lengths and paid so much to cover it up and are still doing it and still getting away with it. This is a very well researched book and should be required reading in schools. ( )

L'édition française a pu bénéficier d'une version remaniée et légèrement abrégée que Robert Proctor a réalisée pour l'édition paperback (brochée) qui paraîtra en langue anglaise en 2014. Nous avons suivi cette version, mais néanmoins choisi de conserver certains passages de la première édition lorsqu'ils étaient particulièrement éclairants pour le public francophone, ainsi que l'appareil critique qui permet une exploration de première main des archives de l'industrie du tabac.
Le lecteur pourra consulter les notes de l'auteur en fin de volume, p. 553-639, et les illustrations dans le cahier central.
