This book follows a little boy named Auggie, whom his mother homeschooled. Now the time has come for Auggie to go to public school with other kids. One thing, though, is that Auggie has differences that some may not like. He was born with facial deformities and has undergone numerous surgeries. At first, many are afraid of Auggie's differences at his new school, but once they get to know him for who he truly is and not just what he looks like, his fundamental world changes, and so do the opinions of those who disapproved of him before. What a beautiful read! I'd probably go 4.5. Yeah, close to 5 but something's holding me back. Not sure what... Anyway, I listened to the audio book with my 10-year old. We're used to reading fantasy or adventure books together so this was a big departure. We did make several comments to each other while reading about how depressing it was but we both agree that it is an incredibly moving book and that all kids 10 and up and all parents should read it. It should be required. To be honest, I am way over young adult books, and this book is the last of it. I'm just done with that period of my life. That being said, I found it really touching because I am sure that so many families and persons out there will relate to August and his family. The struggle is real, and it's true that life can be rough on kids with "facial deformities", but you have to work with what you got and make the best of it. I would recommend this to most middle schoolers, it's a really good read, and they will come out the other side with the ability to be sympathetic and more understanding. It's also a positive read and would help cheer up any kid with a deformity of some sort.
