Alexandra.Moraiti: They are both well written compassionate, funny and humane books. Although Wonder isn't about a boy with a disability , both books tell the story of two individuals that manage the socially imposed difficulties of their 'conditions'. The narration in both is in first person in Wonder by August Pullman(Auggie ), his friends and family, and in The Curious Incident of The Dog In The Night-time by Christopher Boone, a boy with Asperger's Syndrome.… (meer)

I would give it a 4.5 rating if possible. This book was recommended to me by a favorite co-worker. We work with kiddos with all types of disabilities and special needs. August Pullman is exceptional in that he is quite an ordinary 10-year old boy who just happens to have a facial deformity. He has never been to "real" school due to multiple surgeries and illnesses. Going into fifth grade, his mom suggests that he might give it a try. Wow. Scary! This book deals with all the emotions of being new along with being different looking. It is is written in different voices of the prominent characters, starting with August "Auggie." You also hear from his sister, a brave girl at his school who befriended him without being asked, a "best" friend who made a mistake, the sister's boyfriend and best friend. The different perspectives really round out the story and give you insight into their lives with this amazing boy. I, of course, identified with the sister because my own sister has a physical disability and I have always felt very protective of her. She was always so mature about people looking at her or being afraid of her, which only baffled me and then would make me angry at the people being so rude. I remember snapping at some little kids in a library program who were wondering, quite loudly, about her right beside us and me saying to them, "She isn't deaf!" Ah, well.

This book is lovely and I would recommend it to everyone. I am really pushing it at home for my own kids but am having a hard time convincing my 11-year old son because everytime he saw me reading it, I was crying. Good crying, but crying none the less. A real feel good book that is enjoyable and well written. ( )

Wonder has become one of my favorite books. The story was written really well and the themes reinforced by this book are timeless. Any student would benefit from reading this book. Even though this book was not written from first hand experience, I believe the book does a good job of building empathy in the minds of its readers. I would recommend this book for fifth through middle school age students. ( )

This book is about a boy name August trying to feel fit in and be accepted into the school. Because he struggling with facial deformities, everyone makes fun of him and discriminates against him for his looks. August trying to change and overcome the fear of scaring everyone and people judging him. This is a great book for high schoolers and education. ( )

This book would be appropriate for intermediate and middle school age children because it is a chapter book, however each chapter is fairly small, about 2-3 pages. In the book, August, a boy with some facial differences, goes to school for the first time and struggles to make good friends as he figures out what school is like. This book would be suitable for a read aloud over a period of days, or it could also be used as a beginning chapter book for students who are getting into reading longer sections of books. It is also a good book that deals with bullying and being kind to one another.

This story tells the unique tale of August, a young boy born with facial deformities. Auggie has struggled to fit in and make friends all is life due to the unique way that his face look. Being outcasted by his peers and facing the hardships of rejection, Auggie learns a lot about life. This book is a great read for anyone that wants a heartwarming but emotional read. This book is great for middle schoolers and anyone that feels like they don't fit in. ( )

Shall we make a new rule of life...always to try to be a little kinder than is necessary? -J.M. Barrie, The Little White Bird
"Kinder than is necessary," he [Mr. Tushman] repeated. What a marvelous line, isn't it? Kinder than is necesary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed. Why I love that line, that concept, is that it reminds me that we carry with us, as human beings, not just the capacity to be kind, but the very choice of knindness. -Palacio, p. 300
... Joseph recognized the face of God in human form. It glimmered in their kindness to him, it glowed in their keenness, it hinted in their caring, ideed it caressed in their gaze. - Christopher Nolan, Under the Eye of the Clock
"It glimmered in their kindness to him ... Such a simple thing, kindness. Such a simple thing. A nice word of encouragment given when needed. An act of friendship. A passing smile." -Palacio, p. 300.
It's like how compass needles always point north, no matter which way you're facing. All those eyes are compasses, and I'm like the North Pole to them. [Auggie, 206]
I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives. [Auggie, 231]
