Deze bespreking was geschreven voorLibraryThing lid Weggevers. I received this book as a free read, and I was excited to read it. Unfortunately, I was only able to give it four stars. I found Lulu's story to be fun and entertaining, but the parts that were about extraneous characters was tedious. I would have liked the whole book to be about Lulu. A cute read. You get a book with high hopes only to be let down or frustrated because the story just doesn't deliver. This book is NOT one of those! Lulu is hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud. Her writing is very personable and she has a no holds back approach. I really enjoyed her true stories. I could have done without the little fictional stories she puts in...but goodness....even those had me laughing! Some of her stories were a little risque for me. But she is honest and up front - from her kitchen to her "Frisky Fridays" at the Holiday Inn. I look forward to more of her writings and definitely recommend this book. This is a collection composed of a mixture of the author’s personal experiences after having lost her job, searching for a new one and compensation eating in the process. It also contains a fictional piece broken up into vignettes throughout the book. On the whole, the true-to-life essays worked much better than the fictional pieces. While the fiction was funny, it suffered from the format used – breaking it up into short bits. It didn’t really allow for much development of, or identification with, the characters. That didn’t mean I wasn’t laughing though … just that I don’t think it had such a great impact as the rest of the book. When Ms. Dean is talking about her job/life experiences, in addition to the humor, I found myself sympathizing with the things she described, especially the battles with finding a job and overeating. The author makes those two things feel like the only stops on a single unending journey, yet she does it with humor and equanimity – not an easy feat by any means. I had some difficulty with some of the grammar and formatting in the book, but fortunately the material was so compelling and the errors minor enough that I was able to overlook them. Some careful editing would definitely improve the reader experience however. If you’ve ever been on the wrong end of the job search, or if you just want a collection of readable, accessible essays to dip into when you have a moment, you cannot go wrong with this book. I will be looking into more of this author’s offerings. Deze bespreking was geschreven voorLibraryThing lid Weggevers. This collection is comprised of Dean's thoughts on losing her job and the hopelessness (and overeating) that followed. There are two different types of writing in this collection, Dean's autobiographical tales about her efforts to get a new job, and some short fiction based on her experiences. In general I found the autobiographical essays to be the strongest part of the book. Dean is funniest when writing about her own life. The fictional parts are so short that there's no real chance for character development, and this is really one of those cases in which the truth is more bizarre (and funnier) than fiction. The strongest message that I took away from this book was a sense of the absurdity of what people will go through merely to get a decent job. The reminder of all of the ridiculous machinations job candidates go through (aside from the normal things like being competent and qualified) is really surreal. This book is not meant to be serious social criticism, but it's hard to leave the text and not be stuck by the demeaning foolishness that is so much a part of job-seeking. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

It's not a long ready, but a very entertaining story. It's well worth the read. ( )
