Mike Mignola, the acclaimed creator of Hellboy, and #1 New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden present a dark fantasy adventure featuring their occult detective in Joe Golem and the Drowning City.
An AudioFile Magazine Earphones Award-winning production!

In 1925, earthquakes and a rising sea level left Lower Manhattan submerged under more than thirty feet of water, so that its residents began to call it the Drowning City. Those unwilling to abandon their homes created a new life on streets turned to canals and in buildings whose first three stories were underwater. Fifty years have passed since then, and the Drowning City is full of scavengers and water rats, poor people trying to eke out an existence, and those too proud or stubborn to be defeated by circumstance.
Among them are fourteen-year-old Molly McHugh and her friend and employer, Felix Orlov. Once upon a time Orlov the Conjuror was a celebrated stage magician, but now he is an old man, a psychic medium, contacting the spirits of the departed for the grieving loved ones left behind. When a seance goes horribly wrong, Felix Orlov is abducted by strange men wearing gas masks and rubber suits, and Molly soon finds herself on the run.
Her flight will lead her into the company of a mysterious man, and his stalwart sidekick, Joe Golem, whose own past is a mystery to him, but who walks his own dreams as a man of stone and clay, brought to life for the sole purpose of hunting witches.

REVIEWED: Joe Golem and the Drowning City: An Illustrated Novel
WRITTEN BY: Christopher Golden and illustrated by Mike Mignola
PUBLISHED: March, 2012

Great, fun book. A wild, imaginative adventure in an alternative sinking New York, amongst a cast of strange specters, magic rites, and steampunk. Imagine the grittiest visions of Batman's Gotham City being submerged and taken over by H.P. Lovecraft - that's a visual to the world that Christopher Golden has created. The book was rich in story that twisted like a wicked serpent and seduces you with its beautiful smile. Mignola's artwork, though infrequent, is characteristic of his deconstructed style that tells a vignette through a simple image.

Five out of Five stars ( )

Lovecraftian steampunk! But also, prose that's adequate at best (and sometimes downright confusing) and a title that's actually a spoiler. So. Not great, but fun. ( )

I usually steer clear of steampunk but this was a great story, Mignola always delivers. ( )

Unusual story somewhere between science fiction, fantasy and fairy tale, places teenage female protagonist in post-disaster, flooded New York of the future. With help from unexpected quarters she tries to rescue the man who's been like a father to her, Felix Orlov, from equally surprising villains. With Mike Mignola's distinctive, evocative illustrations, the book is a very good read. ( )

This is a great book from the team that brought us Lord Baltimore. It is similar to Baltimore in being an illustrated novel -- not a graphic novel or comic -- and may actually be in the same setting as that previous work. It's a very interesting pastiche of the disaster story, Lovecraftian cosmic horror, and steampunk. Also, the book itself is a handsome tome. I look forward to more by this writing team. ( )

The steampunk supernatural world the authors have created is unique and inventive. Many elements and themes should be familiar to Mignola buffs, but that doesn't diminish the story's originality. The illustrations are a bit disappointing, though, as most add little to the narrative and many are small and vague or indistinguishable. But that's a small mark against an otherwise fun and well-written read. Recommended for fans of Hellboy, dystopian novels, and those who like a little horror with their action stories.

With Jules Verne technology, ghosts, magic and multidimensional monsters, it doesn’t fall that far from Mignola’s Hellboy origins, but it’s an awfully fun way to pass an afternoon.

It's crossovers all the way, and the world that results (made even richer by Mr. Mignola's drawings) is one of the most powerful "neverwheres" of the modern fantastic imagination. Joe Golem is surely booked for further adventures.
