The book Light: First Science by Mari Schuh was a great read about light. It had vocabulary words in bold and a glossary at the end where kids could find the definition. These were great features of text that were embedded in the read. The book was very enaging for second graders as there was fun facts about light every other page. The book also asked thought provoking questions here and there throughout the book. This got kids thinking about the properties of light and applying what they are reading to the world around them. The examples throughout the book were interesting as well as relevant to a young reader, as they were everyday examples. The book also addressed a common misconception about light, that is that the moon does not create its own light, rather reflect the suns light. This book overall was a great first/second grade informative text about light. ( ) Another book in the “first science” series. This is perhaps even more basic than the sound book, with only 5 highlighted vocabulary words, but again, would be very useful to introduce kids to science topics and use and a book to read during literacy time. One thing that is very helpful about this book (and the series) is that although not packed with information, it introduces readers not only to the content of the properties of light, but also to non-fiction text structures. It would be a great way to introduce young children to non—fiction tools like the glossary and index. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
