Reboots, Undead Can Dance Author: Mercedes Lackey, Cody Martin Publisher: Caezik SF & Fantasy, Arc Manor LLC Publishing Date: 2021 Pgs: 335 Dewey: F LAC Disposition: Irving Public Library - South Campus - Irving, TX ======================================= REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS Summary: Say hello to Humph the Boggart, the principled, down-on-his-luck private detective, Skinny Jim the zombie, and Fred the werewolf, in this film noir-style space opera. Humans aren’t alone anymore—in fact, they share a planet with undead and near-dead beings, living in…semi-harmony, depending on who you ask! This is the world of Reboots—where zombies, vampires, and werewolves live side-by-side with humans, taking whatever jobs they can in order to coexist peacefully. So, what better job to give almost dead or dead beings, than one that consists of no air, cosmic radiation, and a lack of life-sustaining essentials? Follow Skinny Jim, a zombie who conceals his ability to speak to avoid being exterminated after an ill-fated war launched by a zombie emperor, leading to an alliance between Norms, the Fangs, and the Furs. And then there’s Humph the Boggart, an ethereal parahuman private investigator who navigates interspecies relationships in claustrophobic extraterrestrial environments with his friends, including Fred the werewolf. _________________________________________ Genre: Science Fiction Fantasy Humorous Paranormal Space Opera Why this book: Zombies, werewolves, and vampires in space…and more…c’mon, I’m in. _________________________________________ The Page 100 Test: √◄ - good to go. ∞◄ - read on. The Feel: This is a brand new book. Feel and smell is like no one has ever opened it before. …yes, I’m a freak like that. I had that “I want more” feeling as the last page approached. Mark of a good story that. Favorite Character: I like Humph. The story picks up when he comes onstage. Hmm Moments: No villains through the Second Act, sure could see Humph as an antagonist or Fred and Skinny Jim, but they’re all three likable characters. The Fangs were the villains of the First Act, but after what happened, they haven’t returned to the stage and probably aren’t going to. So much better once Humph comes onstage. Better still when the detective agency gets together. Uhm Moments: I really thought the Diabolical Streak was the ultimate chapter of the Boggart, Barkes, and Bot adventure. Penultimate, it is. Could’ve been the end with some denouement stuff. Hope that the additional book doesn’t steal the fire. The Werewolf ethnic cleansing is an interesting note. Seems like it should have been more significant in the overall universe of the book. Calling the Ball: Claire has to reappear, doesn’t she? Maybe not since this originally appeared as separate stories featuring the same characters. Meh / PFFT Moments: The car chase after the break-in at Nightshade feels contrived or a "we need an add-on here for page count or whatever". Definitely wasn't added for flow. It does provide an out for Lori, which may have been the move to take her off the chessboard. Turd in the Punchbowl: Don’t be the Wendigo again…don’t be the Wendigo again…don’t be the Wendigo again… Dreamcasting: Maybe I’m getting dense in my old age, but I didn’t start picturing Claire as played by Lauren Bacall until the book was almost over. Course they turned up the crime noir errata in the last story of the collection too, so it follows. Movies and Television: Considering we live in our X-Files/True Blood/Supernatural/Midnight Texas/Grimm world, I could see this as a series/movie. Soundtrack: After I stumbled to the Lauren Bacall as Claire idea and with Humphrey Boggart, the Bogart, being the star of the piece, the song Key Largo by Bertie Higgins started playing over and over in my head. _________________________________________ Pacing: Well paced, once you get through the story of the voyage of the Cenotaph. Last Page Sound: Here’s looking at you, kid. Love that it didn’t go for the star-crossed lovers finding each other again and running away together trope and stuck to its film noir roots. Author Assessment: Would def read more. ======================================= Book Info: Genre: Science Fiction/fantasy cross-genre. Monsters in Space, essentially Reading Level: Adult Recommended for: fans of cross-genre stories, sci-fi, urban fantasy Trigger Warnings: violence My Thoughts: I ran across Mercedes Lackey signing books at Dragon Con quite by accident. What a happy accident! This consists of two novellas. It is part of the Stellar Guild series, novellas written by a well-known author and a new author that is being mentored by him or her. The first novella (“Bad Moon Rising” by Cody Martin) is a space opera with monsters, and the second (“Bullets” by Mercedes Lackey) is more PI/noir. They are both very fun stories! I do recommend that readers pay very close attention in “Bad Moon Rising,” because every time there is a break in the text, one is being sent to a new narrator, which can be a bit confusing at first. Still, I enjoyed the stories and now I want the rest... Series Information: The Stellar Guide series Book 1: Reboots Book 2: Tau Ceti Book 3: On the Train Book 4: When the Blue Shift Comes Book 5: New Under the Sun Book 6: The Aethers of Mars Disclosure: I bought this book for myself at Dragon Con. All opinions are my own. Synopsis: Space travel is tough. No air, cosmic radiation, absolute lack of other life-sustaining essentials. What better way to deal with space travel than to man ships with creatures that regenerate or don’t need air, or are immune to various maladies? In a future world where zombies, vampires and werewolves co-exist with ‘normal’ humans on Earth, these ships are staffed by a motley crew of various types of undead or near-dead creatures. Of course no one really knows what happens when zombies and vampires are squeezed together in the close confines of a spaceship. Don’t you love surprises? Some interesting concepts. I picked it up because of Mercedes Lackey - which was the idea, these little books contain two bits. One by an established author with a following, one by a new author who the established author and the publisher think deserves to be better known. So - zombies in space really doesn't sound very interesting...but Martin Cody produced a reasonable universe in which the idea works, and developed some very interesting characters in doing so. Then opened up into a whole new set of characters, and complications (I wonder if the Fae came out of the closet later, so Fred and Jim didn't know about them?) and Misty took them and ran with them. Skinny Jim was definitely Cody's protagonist, with Fred as a secondary character; Misty barely touched them. Jim shows up literally in the last couple pages of the book, and Fred in person is present for only the last chapter. The rest of Misty's part is the Boggart and his adventures, as he tries to track down Fred (and completely ignores the zombies). So - overall, interesting and enjoyable, I'd like to see more of this universe and specifically of Skinny Jim, and I'll be looking out for Martin Cody's books.
