Scenes of Clerical Life II (Janet's Repentance) [and] The Lifted Veil, by George Eliot (read 17 Sep 2011) The third (Janet's Repentance) of the three stories which make up Scenes of Clerical Life is in this volume, as is a 60-page story by Eliot called The Lifted Veil. Janet's Repentance is a didactical story, slow-moving and with only a touch of melodrama (when the brutal husband forces Janet out in the cold in her nightgown). I found it the least interesting of the three stories which make up Scenes of Clerical Life. The LIfted Veil has elements of fantasy involving the principal character foreseeing that he will marry his brother's betrothed and come to hate her. Some of the setting reminded me of Edgar Allan Poe--but it is not as good a story as those Poe wrote. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
