There is a growing sense of dread as you have a sense things are going to get bad, but it is paced so magnificently and framed against a simply creepy atmosphere that has made this a certified classic for both genres. The VFX, also, are superb; this feels like a '90s movie, and I mean that in the best possible way. The effects all look like they're decades ahead of their time, but they're from the '70s. The acting is also done well from a great cast, making for an amazing and thrilling horror tale set in space. Highly recommended. Content Concerns: Violence and language are the two biggest causes for concern: the violence does get rather bloody at times, though not particularly gory except for the "scene," which even that isn't as bad as I expected. Language, though, does contain uses of both stronger and milder language, including a couple uses of "f-ck" and some unfortunate uses of blasphemy.  A Gothic horror move set in outer space, ALIEN proved that material derided as B-movie fodder could be handled with finesse and glossy production values, without diminishing the thrills or polishing over the hard-edged horror... In the end, it is fair to say that ALIEN is probably the most beautiful piece of filmmaking ever about a terrifying subject.
