I was really expecting this to be awesome. Turns out it's just a bad soap opera. There's about ten or fifteen minutes of action/horror stuff in each episode, and those bits are really good, but otherwise it's terrible. Picking up immediately after the thrilling cliff-hanger, Negan forces Rick and the group to fall under his will, brutally convincing them to live by his rules. To prevent further bloodshed, Rick genuinely believes they can make life under Negan, however terrible, work. But he soon learns that Negan can't be reasoned with, and they must prepare to go to war now. Victory will require more than Alexandria, and Rick will need to convince their new allies from the Kingdom and the Hilltop to band together with the common goal of taking down Negan and his army. One of the most iconic and popular television series of the 2010s, The Walking Dead starts off with a resounding pilot season. Incredible sound design and a hauntingly quiet backdrop make for a very creepy entry into this world of the undead, and as the series progresses, we are able to become more familiar with our cast of characters, written and acted to perfection by a wonderful and diverse cast. The actions all fall in line with what you'd expect from such a variety of individuals in such a trying situation, and you can't help but feel for all of them in this insane world -- well, most of them anyways. It's a strong start that doesn't really fall off at all, helped very well by its short, 6-episode length. Highly recommended for fans of the genre; others, especially the more squeamish, might not enjoy it quite as much.
Content Concerns: The war between the living and the dead is at the forefront, and we get a lot of violence on-screen. Characters, both alive and zombified, are killed by gunshots, beatings, stabbings, and getting devoured, shown to varying degrees (sometimes we see the brutality, and other times we are spared of it). Many times there are shots of blood and some gore, so the more squeamish viewers should go in prepared. There is also some brief sexual content, but it is mostly off-screen or merely alluded to. Language can also be a concern; each episode has roughly 6-10 uses of vulgarity, typically milder language but sometimes the dialogue will feature uses of "sh-t" or "b-tch." One character also uses racial slurs, but he's clearly portrayed in a poor light.
