This is a beautifully written, intense story about a sad and terrible affair. In a small, peaceful town in post-World War II Virginia, a wealthy man named Harrison "Boaty" Glass buys a poor young country girl as his wife. Sylvan Glass is shy, graceful, and elegant, enamored with the idea of Hollywood and being like a movie star. Charlie Beale is an enigmatic man who comes from outside Brownsburg, sets himself to working for the town butcher, and who is drawn to Sylvan. Though the plot seems contrived while reading it in plain English, Goolrick has a way with words. The town and its people are described in lovely prose that is both foreboding and intense in its beauty and potential. Goolrick's novels are not so much to be enjoyed as to be absorbed, to be immersed in. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

In 1948, a mysterious and charismatic man arrives in a small Virginia town carrying two suitcases; one contains his worldly possessions, the other is full of money. He soon inserts himself into the town's daily life, taking a job in the local butcher shop and befriending the owner and his wife and their son. But the passion that develops between the man and the wife of the town's wealthiest citizen sets in motion a series of events that not only upset the quiet town but threaten to destroy both him and the woman.
