This was in actuality two related stories in one. I liked the first part, but not the second part. The first part dealt with the narrator's rescue of a seeming deaf mute being bullied by neighborhood toughs. As he slowly brings her back to reality, they fall in love.

In the second part of the book, the narrator deals with a set of conniving, underhanded sisters who stand to inherit a fortune. It's a sweet little tale, although
perhaps too saccharine sweet. It lacked character depth and it basically was in the end tolerable. The whole thing seems to be based on Michael Avallone's "The Spitting Image," although the similarity could just be a coincidence.
