Secret Light by ZA Maxfield is an unusual historical romance written with the complex characterization and perfect, smooth prose for which this author is known. It centers on the deep emotional isolation experienced by the main character due to some heavy lifelong secrets he carries. When he finds love, he also has to find the courage to claim the relationship that he deserves and the emotional salvation that it brings. The story has a mood of deep sadness, but is also full of hope. The characters behave true to the times, and are both appealing men.

It’s 1955 in Los Angeles, and Rafe is a charming salesman whose dapper manners and light touch can win over even the most stubborn client. This is no small feat because Rafe is Austrian, complete with an accent and lots of German expressions, and the Second World War still lingers in the minds of most Americans who have lost brothers and fathers only ten years before. No one knows that the history of Rafe’s family is as far removed as possible from supporting the Nazi party, which makes it bitterly unfair when he is harassed by unseen enemies for supposedly being a Nazi. This brings him into the orbit of protective policeman Ben, and soon their mutual attraction becomes almost too strong to hide.
