"A man drives his truck up to a cliff's edge. Unable to go any further, he opens the back door of his truck and a flock of birds flies out, but, as the man soon discovers, a small timid bird remains. Surprised and delighted, the man acts kindly towards the bird and an intimacy develops. After lunch, the man tries to show the bird that he should fly off and join his friends. The man's comic attempt at flight deepens the encounter between these two very different creatures. Soon the bird flies off and the man drives away, but in a surprise twist the bird and his friends return, and in a starkly lyrical moment we see them all experience something entirely new"--… (meer)

I would like this better if it were wordless. ( )

I normally have a hard time buying into these kinds of profound, high-message type books, but this was just lovely. ( )

As a wordless book, this is a really sweet story to share with kids.

The only thing is, it has words. The text is sweet, too; it's extrapolated from a bit of an e.e. cummings poem. But it's a bit too abstract for kids.

My suggestion: use the book's pictures for your kid and enjoy the text on your own. ( )

This book is mostly illustrations, but the short words explain that we must take a second to look at the small things in life and they will seem more important.

This is a story of a man who takes a big truck out to the middle of nowhere and sets birds free to fly away. He lets all of the big ones out, but there is still one very tiny one sitting in the deep back of the truck. The bird and the man sat talking by the truck, when the man shares his lunch with him, and then teaches to bird to fly. Once the bird flies, he returns to the man in his truck to thank him with the gesture of returning. The illustrations are almost the same throughout the entire book and the words are very simple. Through the pictures, it seems as if the man is lonely and just wants a friend to be with, and his new friend was a bird. Throughout the story the author repeats the phrase, “little things” and these little things are the things that make someone happy. Although there are many lessons that can be learned from this story, I think a main one would be to do the little things for people, like sharing a sandwich, or sitting on the truck talking to make someone feel comforted. Students can learn to be generous to others like the man in this story, and it doesn’t even have to be to another person. A child could show an act of generosity by feeding their pet at home. An enjoyable read for new readers as well. ( )
