This book is geared towards older elementary students.

This book shares a bunch of fun poems. Some are short and some are longer and each talk about different insects. It follows along with something they do or a big part of their life. This book would be good to use to share bits and parts during a science lesson or when learning about certain bugs. ( )

"Bug Off!" by Jane Yolen is a book of 13 short poems. Each poem is about a different type of insect. The poems are very quirky and cute and at the end of each one their is an informational paragraph about each insect. These talk about what "families" they belong to, what they eat, and their environments. I thought this aspect was really interesting! An extension activity for this book could be a compare and contrast between 2 of the insects discussed in the book. Another activity could be to have the student write a creative passage about if they could be a bug, which one they would choose to be and why? ( )

I personally enjoyed this fun book because of the pictures and fun poems related to each insect. I feel this would be a great book for young boys since they are usually drawn to the creepy bugs and crawly things! The other great addition to this book was the fantastic facts that were noted at the bottom of each poem. I can say i tout i knew my fair share about certain bugs, i was WAY off. ( )

In this book of poetry, each two-page spread includes a photograph, poem, and educational paragraph for a variety of well-known insects such as flies, lovebugs, and spiders. The photographs by Jason Stemple capture these familiar insects in such beautiful detail that it feels as though you have not seen them before now. The poetry is fun and youthful. One fun example is this stanza, “Which legs go forward? Which go back? Or which legs help pick up the slack?” (Daddy Very Long Legs, p. 18). A more serious example is from POP! Goes the Tick (p. 25), “But never try to squeeze him. He’ll pop! and leave some ick. Bacteria comes sliding out, which makes a person sick.” The author collaborated with the entomology department at the University of Florida and the publisher’s science editor. The author encourages readers to write their own poems about insects. The poems are suitable for story time. The book blends poetry and science in a creative and informative manner. School libraries should consider adding this to their science collection.
