Lang Downs: Book One Caine Neiheisel is stuck in a dead-end job at the end of a dead-end relationship when the chance of a lifetime falls in his lap. His mother inherits her uncle's sheep station in New South Wales, Australia, and Caine sees it as the opportunity to start over, out on the range where his stutter won't hold him back and his willingness to work will surely make up for his lack of knowledge. Unfortunately, Macklin Armstrong, the foreman of Lang Downs who should be Caine's biggest ally, alternates between being cool and downright dismissive, and the other hands are more amused by Caine's American accent than they are moved by his plight⦠until they find out he's gay and their amusement turns to scorn. It will take all of Caine's determinationâand an act of cruel sabotage by a hostile neighborâto bring the men of Lang Downs together and give Caine and Macklin a chance at love. I found this to be a nice light romance book set in the Australian Outback. Caine has a problem with stuttering so is stuck in a dead end job and no boyfriend. His mother inherits Lang Downs, a sheep station or ranch in Australia and Caine sees the station as a place to start over and continue his great-uncle's legacy. Caine knows nothing about sheep ranching but what he lacks in knowledge he makes up for in determination. Macklin Armstrong is the burly, weathered foreman of the station who along with most of the station workers think that Caine is just a blow-in that will run back to the States in no time. Caine is hot for Macklin but Macklin runs hot and cold toward the boss. Macklin is deeply in the closet and is terrified to come out thinking that he'll lose the respect of his men or possibly lose his job. I enjoyed both sexual and intellectual tension between the two men. The characters in the book were well crafted but not terribly deep. They were just hard working men doing their jobs. There were no big surprises or plot twists here just a good solid romance story. This is a good choice if you're looking for an easy, light novella. ( )
