Jack Ryan, a drifter and small-time delinquent, arrives at the Thumb area of Michigan[2] as a seasonal farm laborer, picking pickles for food tycoon Ray Ritchie. He soon gets involved with Nancy, a young seductress, currently Ray Ritchie's girlfriend, though she is also cheating on him with another man, Bob Jr. For a while, Ryan and Nancy get their thrills smashing windows and breaking and entering, but Ryan soon gets a shot at settling down with the help of justice of the peace Mr. Majestyk, who hires Jack as a handyman at his beach resort. When Nancy grows bored with housebreaking and burglary and conceives a plan to steal the laborers' payroll, Ryan must choose between following her in her chase for "the big bounce" or the stability of an honest life. This is the story of a washed up baseball player, now a petty criminal, neither career amounting to anything, looking for the next score. He meets his match with a seductress who pushes her boundaries and drags him along. It is not a western as I first suspected but tries to be a crime novel that comes off more like a bunch of juvenile delinquents. More talk than action. At first I was underwhelmed. Then the pace picked up and the plot quickly turned into a page turner, for a while. The built up to something that I expected to be shattering, but it fizzled. I enjoyed how the main characters were all crooks, each with varying levels of experience and none with reasonable motivations. All elements considered, I enjoyed this book for the character development, the writing, and the pace. It still won't be a long-term favorite. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"The greatest crime writer of our time, perhaps ever!"-New York Times Book ReviewWhen the all-time greats of mystery/noir/crime fiction are mentioned (John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, Robert Parker, etc.), Elmore Leonard's name invariably tops the list. A true Leonard classic, The Big Bounce showcases all of the Grand Master's acclaimed skills-twisty plotting, unforgettable characters, dialogue so razor sharp it could draw blood-as he chronicles the misadventures of a larcenous young man in a Michigan resort town who's irresistibly drawn to a dangerous femme fatale, a rich man's plaything, and the nasty little caper they plan to pull off together-if they can somehow manage to survive each other. The acclaimed creator of Raylan (aka U. S. Marshal Raylan Givens, lately of TV's smash hit Justified), Leonard has never lost the mojo that makes him "the King Daddy of crime writers" (Seattle Times).
