From the unique mind of Douglas Adams, the legendary "lost" Doctor Who story has been completed at last by Gareth Roberts and narrated by Lalla Ward. The Doctor’s old friend and fellow Time Lord Professor Chronotis has retired to Cambridge University--where nobody will notice if he lives for centuries. But now he needs help from the Doctor, Romana and K-9. When he left Gallifrey he took with him a few little souvenirs--most of them are harmless. But one of them is extremely dangerous. The Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey isn’t a book for Time Tots. It is one of the Artifacts, dating from the dark days of Rassilon. It must not be allowed to fall into the wrong hands. The sinister Skagra most definitely has the wrong hands. He wants the book. He wants to discover the truth behind Shada. And he wants the Doctor’s mind... Based on the scripts for the original television series by the legendary Douglas Adams, Shada retells an adventure that never made it to the screen.… (meer)

A loving tribute to Douglas Adams and Doctor Who, this is a fun read and it's great to finally get the story in full.

Mr. Roberts, you did a wonderful job. Thank you!

On becoming a god (at least in his own mind):
"At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'" (pg. 3)

Evidently Mr. Douglas was a fan of what is an obscure rock band on this side of the pond:
"The left turn was completely blocked by an enormous truck, with almost equally enormous men in denim jackets and black t-shirts lugging musical instruments and amplifiers into an adjoining building. The truck, the men and the amplifiers were all emblazoned with a Latin motto. So, thought the Doctor, he couldn't go that way either - he had no wish to upset the status quo."

This is the fourth Doctor Who novel I've read and is by far the best so far. This is partly due, no doubt, to the fact that the 4th Doctor is undoubtedly the best Doctor in my opinion and will always remain so. The fact that his companion, Romana(the 2nd Romana in my imagination, you know, the blonde with the pink Doctor's outfit) is also from Galifrey and a Time-Lady herself and is the Doctor's equal in almost every way just puts the cherry on top for me. The story itself is by Gareth Roberts but was an original TV script that didn't air at the time due to industrial action and was written by none other than Douglas Adams, so things really don't get any better than this as far as I can see.

I loved this novel. I loved the 4th Doctor. I loved the 2nd Romana. Think I'm going to have real trouble finding another Doctor Who novel that even comes close now.

Fantastic. A very well deserved 5 stars.
