Health & Fitness. Travel. Nonfiction. HTML:Bronze Winner 2012 Foreword Reviews Book of The Year, Travel Guides Category22 Accessible Road Trips contains useful and detailed information about accessible travel, that's readable, informative and pertinent. The book is aimed at those who use wheelchairs, walkers or just have mobility issues. Organized geographically, the book is divided into 22 chapters, with each chapter detailing a loop driving route that can be completed in approximately 2-3 weeks. The routes are spaced throughout the US, with each route having a theme or a commonality. Each route begins in a gateway city with a major airport, so the trips can also be completed as fly-drive packages. And of course they can always be broken up into shorter trips, or even day excursions. Flexibility is the key with this book, with plenty of opportunity to personalize each route to meet individual tastes, time frames and budgets.

Candy includes details about accessible lodging, sites, trails, attractions and restaurants. She also gives readers a real flavor of the drives, with off-the-beaten-path finds, unique roadside attractions and rural driving routes also included. After all, accessibility is in the eye of the beholder; and what may be accessible to one person can be filled with obstacles to someone else.

This book provided an excellent overview of the issues someone with accessibility problems would face when travelling--parking, walkability, ramps, etc. I would be concerned about how well it will hold up over time, as these sorts of things are constantly changing. ( )

This is an excellent travel book for depth of itinerary, planned routes and detail. The focus is on access, which is for those with mobility impairment, however I found this was important when I broke my leg in 2012, kids slow you down and so does age. Anyone who wants to get out and enjoy historic and natural landmarks would benefit from this book. Its only lack was color pictures which would have added so much to the text. ( )

The book did very well of covering the United States and found the trips were well rounded for all interests. While not acquainted with all the excursions, I found the ones I was familiar with were well planned. ( )

I received this book through Early Reviewers. After I realized it would be impossible for me to give a true review, I loaned it to a friend with Parkinsons who was doing a cross country trip by plane and car.
After some time, he reported to me this was an excellent resource and one that helped him make travel decisions based on his need for a walker. ( )

"22 Accessible Road Trips" by Candy B. Harrington is an appropriate reference for individuals who may have physical limitations, but who are still interested in travel. The author has chosen twenty-two possible trips in various regions throughout the United States and provides information and directions to make these trips as accessible as possible.

In order to judge the content and recommendations, it is possible to choose a trip area with which one is familiar, then make comparisons between the information provided and one's own knowledge of the area.

In doing just that with three trips in the Mountain States region, as well a couple of trips in the southern and northern part of the Central States region, the book stands up well to the goals and objectives the author set for herself.

While recognizing that this book could not possibly cover everything along the routes chosen, a possible recommendation: a bit more cultural information related to several of the regions would have enriched the overall trip possibilities. For example, to tour the national parks of southern Utah without even the slightest reference to the predominant Mormon culture throughout the region is a definite shortcoming. The trip through southern Idaho has similar shortcomings. There are cultural references attached to other trips, but that may be an issue that needs attention should the book be reissued at a later date.

Otherwise, the book offers interesting insights for travel in the United States and compiles a series of trips that could be as attractive to the more mobile population as they should be to the target audience, the "wheelers and slow walkers." ( )
