Designed to accompany the use of children's books from all genres, this exceptional text helps teachers meet the challenge of selecting the best literature for children for the classroom, library, or home. Unlike an anthology of children's literature, which includes selected chapters or text summaries, the seventh edition of this highly-regarded text teaches how to make appropriate judgments about what constitutes quality children's literature. Using the critical standards for all literature, selections are explained and are supplemented by special issues in judging books for children. A great resource for learning and understanding how to critically analyze children's literature, particularly fiction, non-fiction, poetry and biography. At this point, the book could use an updating of referenced titles and terminology but otherwise the whole is extremely valuable.

(Preface) A Critical Handbook of Children's Literature, now in its third edition, has grown out of my conviction that literature for children differs from literature for adults in degree, not in kind, and that writing for children should be judged by the same standards as writing for adults.
We pick up McCall's magazine at the drug store, TV Guide in the supermarket, National Geographic in the doctor's office, and pore over Europe on $25 a Day to give us information and vicarious experience, but they are not literature.
