Adventures in Two Worlds is the 1952 autobiography of Dr. A. J. Cronin, in which he relates, with much humour, the exciting events of his dual career as a medical doctor and a novelist. Adventures in Two Worlds: Dr Cronin's published novels make up an imposing list of successes. This book, his first non-fiction work, which relates moving and dramatic episodes from his dual career as doctor and novelist will certainly be as widely ready and applauded as his preceding publications. Dr Cronin has recorded not only the achievements of his early life but also the struggles and setbacks that gave him such a sympathetic understanding of the sufferings of others.… (meer)

A. J. Cronin was a Scottish doctor and author who did most of his work in the early 20th Century. His best known novels include The Citadel and The Keys to the Kingdom. Adventures in Two Worlds is billed as his autobiography, although it’s really more of a memoir since it primarily consists of specific episodes from his life instead of telling his entire life story. The half of the book, which recounts his career as a doctor, is very much like James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small (although not nearly as funny). The second half of the book is about his career as an author and his thought regarding his personal religious beliefs.

I really liked the first part of the book about his medical experiences, especially because that part of his life provided the basis for many of his novels. His time spent as the doctor in a coal mining town was particularly touching. The second part of the book got pretty tedious, though. The reflections on how he started writing and his career as an author we ok (nothing really interesting happens when you’re shut up with a typewriter all day, does it?). Cronin really lost my interest when he started expounding on his religious beliefs and claiming that a rational being couldn’t possibly believe anything other than what he believed. He tried to justify his point of view, but his arguments lacked kind of logical support. ( )

My first introduction to this author, though certainly not the last.
Absolutely loved his style, unique command of English
that made reading pure pleasure.
Two of his books were made into movies.
Based on this autobiographical book, the BBC ran an ongoing series, Dr. Finlay.
Amazing man. Amazing human interest stories from Scotland, Wales, London, Europe.
Found it in the lounge library while searching for Scottish authors for the Scotland Reading Challenge 2013.

Frustrated my original and lengthy review seems lost - a repeat occurence at goodreads it seems - perhaps just my experience? Anyway, a book worth reading and appreciating the elegant and descriptive writing. From the male perspective which I tend to appreciate when relationships are part of the story...
