I was going to say that I don't really read fiction with moral/ethical plots to them but i have the entire Jodi Picoult backlist, so who am I kidding? This book made me cry and I don't cry for books. Movies, yes. I sob like a fool over soppy celluloid but not books. Sibley did a great job of making Elle, who was essentially dead at the beginning, live, breathe and interact with everyone throughout the tale. You feel as though you know her. I liked all the various interactions between the families. Family drama is so hard and this book really makes you feel the angst. I can't believe this is a debut novel. I hope she produces another work soon, 'cause I intend to read it! ( ) This book made me want to start a new shelf called books that make me think. When Matt's wife falls and ends up brain dead, he thought he had the decision to take her off life support in the bag. Then he finds out she's pregnant and everything changes. What comes next is a battle between Matt and the others who loved Elle to make a decision about the future of Elle/the baby. This book really drove home the need to have a clear and up to date advanced directive, even if you think you won't need it for a long time. Accidents happen all the time and sometimes our bodies are holding secrets that we don't even think about. I definitely was in DEEP THOUGHT mode after this book. I somehow managed to not see anything on this book anywhere - on any blogs, amazon, goodreads - anywhere. Then, I was in Target and it was their featured book club book. I picked it up and read the back and was intrigued. I enjoy Jodi Picoult books a lot and this sounded like her. I'm very glad I picked it up. Pricelle Sibley doesn't write with all the polish and flair that Picoult does but this was a very well thought out and written story. I loved Matt and his determination to save his and Elle's baby. I appreciated the tension with her family and their differing views. Plus, I was curious the entire time as to whether or not the baby would live. I just kept reading and thinking, "I've got to read fast so that I can find out what happens." This book raises some interesting moral issues. They're not as heart-wrenching as most of the issues in Picoult's stories but it was still intriguing. I wondered what I'd do in that position and how hard I'd fight for the unborn child. I felt like there were things that Sibley could have done to twist that emotional knife in the heart just a little bit more but overall, this was a well-thought out and written book. I love a book that makes me think and makes me wonder what would I do, how would I feel. This book does that and adds what would I want. Your thoughts, your feelings, your beliefs, and your morals all come into play as the story unfolds. A doctor's beloved wife falls and becomes brain dead. As he is about to honor her request and remove life support, he learns that she is pregnant with their child. Should he follow her wishes to die or her dreams of having a baby? You'll have to read this wonderful book to find out.
Sibley does a wonderful job of exploring a complex and controversial moral issue, skillfully giving both sides of the story. She also draws on her experience as a neonatal intensive-care nurse to make complicated medical procedures interesting and easy to understand.
