I'm not sure if I liked it, but it certainly got a reaction out of me. It was one of the most subtle character studies I've read. The main character is so vile (even for me) that I almost didn't finish the book, and I certainly didn't see how there could be a series with that character. Not only that, but its a slaughterhouse, don't get attached to any of the characters. I appreciate an author willing to bump people off. So the characters you are drawn too are not those who transition to lead our series here. There is no heroism. There is atrocity. There is great characterization, but this is not what we have come to expect in the genre. Then if you are looking for something that gives you a sense of victory and uplifts you at the end of the story, it does not come. Our protaganoists whom we are left with our anti-heroes. There is no feeling that their survivial is something worth investing three to four hours to read this tale. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

The book has the sort of stultifying, mannered prose that is comically suited to historical fiction. In that, it's a distant cousin of Mary Renault. it's just short of the enjoyable sort of boring that the best historical fiction is.
It's not good, but it's not bad enough that one can't finish it and has more than enough spicy flogging. However, I agree with the other reviewers who feel confused and disappointed that one of the least interesting characters ends up being the titular character of the series. It's like a secret Bildungsroman told at the expense of our best loved (and hottest!) characters. who is the rest of this series for? fans of boredom? ( )
