No longer the leader of the Olympians, Konstantin has now gone into hiding. Konstantin is vulnerable, and Anderson believes now is the perfect time to destroy his nemesis. He orders private eye Nikki Glass to use her powers to locate Konstantin, and she balks at the idea until a series of attacks leads her to believe that Konstantin is gunning for her and Anderson instead of remaining safely in hiding.Nikki's search is complicated by Cyrus-Konstantin's son and the new leader of the Olympians-who threatens retribution should his father be killed. The complications mount up as Nikki begins to suspect that Konstantin might not be behind the attacks after all. The only person who hates Konstantin more than Anderson does is Anderson's estranged wife, Emma, who has joined the Olympians. And Nikki knows Emma would be more than happy if Anderson and his people embroiled themselves in an all-out war against the Olympians-a war they cannot hope to win.As Nikki tries to figure out who the true enemy is, she deals with her tumultuous relationship with Jamaal, who struggles to control his death magic. But being loved by a descendant of a death goddess is the least of Nikki's worries.… (meer)

This is the third book in the Nikki Glass series and for the most part, it's pretty good. We see some more character development and Nikki trying to learn her powers.

The book starts off slow, compared to the other two books but has an explosive ending. The end is what makes the book and I want to pick up the fourth book to find out what happens next.

We learn a little more about Anderson, which I love, since he's my favorite character. I also want to read the next book to find out more about him.

In this book we get more interaction with the Olympians and how they are run, especially with Konstantin's Son, Cyrus. He's an interesting character and I can't wait to see more of him, especially with how this book ended.

Nikki is still her strong self, except when it comes to Jamaal. I love her in any other scene, except when thinks or interacts with him. I don't know what it is, probably the hormones of her attraction to him, but her senses go out the window. I do wish she would listen to him and give him space, she can't change him, only he can (if he wants to.) They may be the same, like she claims, but that's no reason to become this hormonal bomb who has no control, when she's with him.

Besides that, I love any other scene she is in. She is starting to learn her powers with the short amount of time she's been an immortal.

The other thing she needs to learn, is to not treat the other descendants like they are human beings. She's always had a moral compass, which is good, but she is surprised far too often in this book when they do something heinous or selfish. I don't know how much time has past, but it has to be somewhere between 3-4 months since she's become an immortal. Which is not a lot of time, but she needs to start learning to not treat the descendants like they have human morals. I do think she learns that at the end of the book, but only time will tell if it sticks.

The ending is the best part of the book and now I'm off to go read the fourth book and see the fallout of what happened.

Overall, I was pleased with the book. ( )

The third book in the series can almost be read as the first one. The book does start a few weeks after the end of book 2 and there is an ebook only novella out that you don't have to read at all to start book 3. Anderson wants Nikki to use her powers to hunt down the former leader of the Olympians but she refuses because she doesn't believe in revenge. While she stalls for time everything she is linked to is attacked. Her office, her condo and her parents home all go up in smoke. Nikki is then attacked and that seems to be the final straw for her. At some points I almost think she is too softhearted to live in the world she has found herself in but hopefully she will toughen up to protect all those she cares about including herself. ( )

If you've never read/listened to this series, I highly recommend you give it a try. Nikki is the descendant of a god, Artemis to be exact. Artemis is a moon goddess who can't miss what she is aiming at and is an excellent tracker. She is born mortal, but if she kills an immortal descendant, their immortality will pass to her. One such immortal, known as Liberi, commits suicide by jumping in front on Nikki's car. This kills him and give Nikki his immortality There are two groups of Liberi that we see throughout the series. Anderson's group, which consists of both Greek god descendants and descendants of other gods like Kali and Loki. There is also the Olympians, which consists only of greek gods. Their goal is to rid the world of Liberi from the other gods. Anderson's group has many more morals than the Olympians, which have next to none. Nikki is forced to join up with Anderson and his team. This will give you some background on the series.

In this book, Nikki is being tormented by either Konstantin, the former leader of the Olympians, or Emma, Anderson’s estranged wife who has joined the Olympians. The confessions of the torment claim to be Konstantin but don't appear to be his style. There is a lot of evidence that points to Emma as the culprit. Emma is convinced that Nikki is after her husband, which is not the case. We watch as Nikki works to uncover who is burning any building that is related to her. She is kidnapped and "killed", she gives the EMTs quite a scare when she returns from the dead. We see more interactions with Cyrus, Konstantin's son and the current leader of the Olympians. Nikki is also having complications of jealousy from Sita, a phantom tiger that belongs to Jammal, who Nikki is interested in.

I love this series and the characters. The world is extremely interesting in it's simplicity and the layers that are uncovered the more we learn. There is some romance, but it is barely blooming and in this book in particular, we see Nikki might be moving towards a love triangle with Anderson and Jaamal.

While this book is action packed, it still seems like a bridge to me for a bigger storyline to come. There is a pretty large cliffhanger at the end of this book that helps me to believe in the "bridge" aspect of this book as well.

I'm sure many of you know Sophie Eastlake, the narrator. She also does the most recent Chicagoland Vampires and all of the Elder Races series. She is a little bit flat in her narration when compared to some, but it works really well with the calm and collected Nikki Glass.
If you've haven't tried this series, I think you should really give it a shot. The first book is a little slow because there is a ton of character and world building, but book two is wonderful and this book is helping to build to something big coming in book four, I think.

Nikki wanted to stay out of any further conflict with the Olympians. Konstantin had stepped down, she could now avoid any more fighting. But Anderson wants vengeance – and Nikki to hunt it down for him

She adamantly won’t do that, but when someone starts targeting her life and her family, she feels like she has no choice, especially when innocents begin dying. Of course, the question is who is actually targeting her – and whether they can be stopped without violating the treaty that prevents the more numerous Olympians going to war with Anderson’s Liberi.

I think this book is, in part, meant to give us chance to catch our breath and recover from the big, dramatic game changers that took place in Deadly Descendant and it definitely does that but I’m not sure it’s needed since there already was the novella Pros and Cons in between to help break up the action.

I’m also not entirely sure if the book was supposed to be a slow lead in to more action or if it just came across as a slow lead in and wasn’t really meant to be.

This ambiguity kind of follows me throughout the book. Nikki is being targeted by cruel and terrible unknown forces (well, the Olympians) who are burning down her parents’ home and her own flat! How terribly traumatising and upsetting…. I guess. I mean, I think it would be terribly upsetting and it certainly is for her sister and parents but Nikki? I don’t know, she doesn’t seem all that upset. Is this supposed to be her emotional disconnect to things, or how she’s moved on from these places? I don’t know – it’s kind of left out on a limb and I’m extrapolating her emotional distress more than it actually being portrayed.

Similarly, when she flips from being willing to risk her life and Anderson’s wrath to not be a murderer to accepting the need to hunt down Konstantin. I can see the reasoning, I can follow the reasoning, I agree with the reasoning – but I don’t FEEL the emotional change I would expect

The same applies to Nikki’s growing affection for Jamaal, it just isn’t really sold to me. Surprisingly, his affection for her is really clear and blatantly obvious even when Nikki doesn’t realise it.
